I know! When my host family in Japan pulled out some grapes to eat after dinner, they just sorta looked at me shocked as I popped em' in my mouth one by one, while they were carefully chewing off the skins and placing them on their plate.

So I tell em' to just try it with the skin--and they do try--but then they look absolutely disgusted, saying the skin isn't tasty at all. And then they go eat some real nasty looking fish guts/fermented soy bean mix paste thing and tell me it's great. Weird.

In Japan they don't eat the skin of grapes. Japanese people are WEIRD.

I had mine pulled over the summer--all four as well. I remember going to the dentist and seeing a video about the operation, with symptoms of the operations including "permanent scarring" and "death." Needless to say my mother wasn't very happy while watching the video :P

But anyway, I was awake during the procedure just like you, although I didn't feel any pain at all when they were drilling and pulling. However, when they gave me an epinephrine shot before the procedure I started shaking involuntarily for quite a while during the operation. I'm amazed the dentist didn't screw anything up while operating on a moving target.

That said, the actual operation itself wasn't that bad and I felt totally gangster coming out of the dentist's with a big chunk of blood-stained gauze in my mouth. Only when I got back home and blood started to ooze out of my mouth and the real pain started to set in did everything start to suck.

Not being able to eat much of anything and feeling pain when walking for a few days/week afterwards also was annoying as hell. I was bedridden for a few days, and even after that walking around the city to work was somewhat difficult. I also kept forgetting to wash my mouth out with salt water every hour. It's just such a hassle.

But in the end when I came back to the dentist two weeks later for a check-up to make sure everything had healed ok, I ended up waiting for about 30 minutes only to have the dentist come in for 30 seconds and tell me I'm perfectly fine.
